The family unit is considered to be the oldest
social structure of society responsible for the
social, cultural and economic stability of the
Community. In Seychelles like in many other
countries the factors contributing to the erosion
and disruption of the family are as follows: the
breakdown of social norms and moral values, the
effects of Globalisation and development, high rate
of substance abuse and the increase in the number of
single parents.
The Local Government Department through its District
Administrations being responsible for Community
Development will intervene as an agent for social
change.
The Family Affairs Programme has been conceived
primarily to strengthen the family unit through the
mobilisation and sensitisation of community members
aged from 25 to 55 years old.
The Local Government Department firmly believes that
an integrated approach is the only way to make a
difference to counter the social ills facing the
Family Unit. It will work with various Ministries,
Organisations, NGOs
and Religious Bodies to ensure that set objectives
are achieved.
